Are you getting ready for spring season? You must be excited to prepare your gardening materials again since planting season is also here. Just imagine how many flowering plants you can grow, and how beautiful their flowers will be once they start blooming.
But wait. Don’t get too hung up on that idea yet. Just like you, I also cannot wait to see how beautiful my garden will be in spring.
However, there are still so many things we need to do before spring season comes. We still need to prepare the soil in our garden for planting flowers.
Why It is Important to Prepare the Soil
There are many reasons why you need to prepare the soil in your garden before you start planting.
Quality depends on the soil: The quality of your flowering plants will greatly depend on your soil composition. If your soil is not balanced, well-drained, not fertile enough and does not have the right acidity level, there will be a chance that your plants will not grow well.
Cultivating the soil helps aerate it: Breaking down the soil will allow air to penetrate it. Aerating the soil is important as it gives the nutrients and benefits the microorganisms that help improve the nature of the soil.
Well-cultivated soil helps seeds sprout: If the soil is cultivated well, newly germinated seeds will easily sprout through the surface of the soil.
How to Prepare the Soil for Planting Flowers
Lucky for you, I have found some easy steps to help prepare the soil. Continue reading below to find out.
Remove weeds: Using a spade, remove the grass and other existing vegetation from your soil. Weeds are no good to your flowering plants that is why it is must that you do this.
Dig deep through your soil: While your seedbeds haven’t been planted on, it is most likely that the soil would turn harder and compact. Dig deep through the soil and pulverize it so it will be a bit softer and easier to plant on.
Sometimes just using a spade won’t be enough to do the trick. That is why it is very much recommended to use a garden tiller, especially when you have a large garden.
Garden tillers vary in sizes and features. There are cheap and small garden tillers that can only work in a small, limited space, while there are also large tillers that are specifically made for bigger work and larger space.
You need to know their differences and how beneficial they are so you can decide which one is the best garden tiller for you. Here are some benefits you can get from a garden tiller:
- It easily loosens the soil.
- It will help easily remove grass and abandoned roots.
- It can bust through any hard objects including big lumps of clay, rocks and big, heavy roots.
- You can easily dig eight to ten inches deep.
- It works faster and is easy to operate.
Test and know what kind of soil you have: There are different kinds of soil. There are soil that are rich in either clay, sand or silt. If your soil is clay-rich, add some coarse sand, compost or peat moss. If it is sandy, add some humus or manure or peat moss. You can also add clay-rich soil into it to enhance its texture. If your soil, on the other hand, is rich in silt, add some coarse sand, gravel and compost.
Mix your soil with organic matter: Organic matter such as manure and composted leaves will help make your soil naturally healthier to plant on since they add nutrients and structure to it. Bark, round or anything from a tree bark will help improve the soil. Compost and manure (composted), on the other hand, are excellent conditioner.
Add lime to your soil: Your soil needs to have the necessary acidity level (pH) that it needs. Adding lime to parts that have only 5.5 pH and below will help get it to the ideal level which is 6 or 7 pH. It is best to lime your soil a month before you plant and after you add manure or compost.
Planting is indeed a very exciting thing to do, but looking at beautiful flowers in spring as the fruits of your labor is even more satisfying. That is why you really have to put in a lot of effort into preparing the soil in your garden before you plant to make sure that your flowering plants grow healthy and beautifully.
